Prime Angus Beef

A closed herd

Our breeding herds are split amongst two properties: the main Slateville Road farm (where the store is), and our Krick Road property (on the way to Susquehanna Orchards). Allowing us to have 200-250 head of cattle at any given time.

The cows are bred, born, and raised from our own closed herd. Closed herd meaning we do not supplement our numbers with cattle from other farms (with the exception of rotating bulls to avoid inbreeding), so our beef is truely our own!

Bulls are kept with our girls year-round, meaning we don't have a strict calving season. This gives us continual supply of steers at various ages and let's schedule butcher dates monthly rather than seasonally or yearly.

By avoiding a strict breeding season we also allow our cows to let nature decide when they do become pregnant, making it a more natural cycle.

The Feed

Our breeding herd is 100% grass-fed.

The weaned calves remain grass fed up until 3 months before butcher. At this point they are offered a once-a-day ration of feed to ensure prime marbling. This ration is a mix of grains grown and grinded by us and is only a secondary option of feed (think of it as a treat) to the finishing cattle. The real "meat" of their diet comes from pasture products and hays.

What gives our Angus a delicious taste? The sileage we offer once a day! Sileage is fermented (think sauerkraut for cows) grass forage and is a handy way to ensure grass-feeding in the winter. It is more typically seen on dairy farms rather than beef, and we are lucky that our farm was originally set up as a dairy farm, allowing us to continue this practice.

Our sileage is also 100% grown and produced on farm.
